One More Reason Turbochargers Rule [ November 19th, 2008 ] By: Charles Smith Posted in » Ramblings

It has been getting cold around here and sitting still in a car does nothing to help keep warm. Luckily I drive a WRX and that means it is turbocharged. Besides the added torque/power it makes, one really nice thing in the winter is that my car heats up faster.

Turbos spin really effing fast, and most turbos are cooled and lubed by the engine oil. The turbocharger is transferring heat from the exhaust gasses and its own spinning into the oil. This beautiful heat transfer results in warmer overall oil and so your cabin heaters work that much faster.

Oh how I do love my turbocharged car. There is one caveat, with the turbocharged car you have to be much more careful about running the engine hard (especially when it is cold) and shutting off the engine too soon after running hard. If the turbo gets very hot from running hard, shutting off the engine shuts off oil flow to the turbocharger. The oil left in it can burn off/cake in the turbo (BAD!!!).

I Hope You Watched The X-Games [ August 4th, 2008 ] By:Charles Smith

The X-Games this year was AMAZING. This is the third year where Rally Racing was present as an event in the X-Games. In pure X-Games fashion the crossover jump was the biggest it has ever been. It was pretty spectacular to watch. Lots of drama and lots of up and comers including a father son team that did better than expected.

Unfortunately the only non-Subaru (Mitsubishi) racing DNFd over the jump. It was driven by Andrew Comrie-Picard, who is trailing Travis Pastrana by 1 point in the Rally America series. ACP ended up coming short on the jump (just a few mph) and the impact on the rear wheels caused him to flip end over end. What makes this more heartbreaking is it was his first race (semi-finals) of the week and he had it won if he made the jump. Why would he have it won? Dave Mirra hit the wall pretty hard and knocked his steering out of alignment right before that (and he thought he DNFd). Luckily for Dave, he was able to finish albeit painfully slow involving many excursions into reverse. There are videos of it popping up all over YouTube: here and here for example. Better luck next year ACP!

It all ended with a battle between last year’s gold medalist and the original X-Games gold medalist: Tanner Foust and Travis Pastrana. Travis was racing with a new co-driver (not too big of a deal on a Super Special) as his current co-driver fractured a vertebrae in the Freestyle Motocross the previous night. These guys are super competitive in everything they do. Anyway, Travis was able to steal the gold from Tanner in their heads up. What an exciting X-Games.

The podium was filled with 4 drivers. Travis Pastrana, Tanner Foust and a tie for bronze between Dave Mirra and Ken Block. I sure hope you caught it on ABC.

I Want More From US Rally Coverage [ July 18th, 2008 ] By:Charles Smith

I was perusing Rally America’s site and one thing caught my eye: air dates for rally coverage on ESPN2. Im excited to see that American rally is making it on to TB, but I’m dissapointed at the same time. STPR, which took place in early June, will not air until July 27th along with Oregon Trail(April 20th) and the Olympus Rally(May 19th). Three rallies, which happened months ago, only get one hour of coverage from 5pm - 6pm (so 42 minutes) total. I think it is a shame we only get 10-15 minutes of coverage per event on TV months after they happened.

Thank god for the X-Games Rally, which will air on ABC for much more than 15 minutes of Rally highlights. How do you guys think the coverage should be handled? During the event have daily highlights and recaps? A whole rally channel to cover every aspect of Rally 24/7? Highlights only? I’m eager to hear what you think.

Two Guys Rally V2 [ July 9th, 2008 ] By:Charles Smith

I hope you have noticed that TwoGuysRally has been undergoing some changes. Combined with the changes we had a peak traffic day to this website from all sorts of other websites (including google). We’re hoping that was a result of caused by you, who so eagerly tell all your racing buddies about us :).

Anyway, expect to see a reorganization of the Articles page, as well as the introduction of a complete sitemap page (link to every possible published page on two guys rally). The ‘?random‘ feature still works and will take you to a random page.

If you notice anything broken, please leave a comment or shoot us a dirty look (aka email). Or if you have any general criticisms of the new layout of the site, leave those in comment form too. We actually do appreciate any constructive criticism.

On a more rally note: Be sure to set your alarm clocks for July 31st (Because I assume you will sleep through to September). The X-Games is airing and their Rally coverage is looking to be good this year. For all of you across the pond, the X-Games is the only easily viewed Rally in the US.
