BMW: A Pretty Awesome Rally Car

While I’m sure it is largely due to the driver, this BMW E30 Rally Car is real fun to watch (and apparently fast!):

What I really like about a BMW as a rally car is that it is different. I like to see cars other than the standard WRX/EVO/Focus/etc… I dont particularly like Saabs, but it is neat to see them out in a Rally. The 911 Rally car was also another neat sight. So that brings up the question, what is the weirdest/most unusual car you have seen compete in a rally?
Oh and to anyone who thinks BMWs only raced on tarmac, here is a link proving otherwise, although it is a different team and slower. Still, its an E30 in dirt/gravel/snow. Mmmmm.

My vote (although I’ve not seen the rally car in person - just 1 “regular” 959) goes to the Porsche 959 Paris-Dakar Rally 959. While the car(s) didn’t fare as well as they hoped (they got banged up pretty bad!!!) the experiment was quite interesting. Imagine a Gallardo lifted and outfitted with extra oil coolers, lightpods, rally tires, skids, etc. That is how strange this entry was in its time.
I find it interesting to see the podiums at international Rally races SOOO filled with Fiats, Seats, and Renaults, when NONE of them are imported into the USA. I’ve not even seen any graymarket cars like that, but maybe there are a couple in areas where rally (not just rallyX) are much more prominent sports.

Yea. The 959 Dakar cars were pretty effing awesome to see.
Late 80s VW GTIs are a pretty common sight in American Rally (probably slightly to due with Tema Oneil pushing them as great starter cars).

Toni Gardemeister (the Suzuki WRC driver) actually owns a BMW M3 rally car which he probably built on his own. There is a video of him rallying in it on YouTube in Finland. I agree that Porsche’s Dakar rally specials are weird. Imagine if Ferrari had done something similar…Yikes!
