Question: What Is Your Favorite Aspect of Rally?
[ November 12th, 2008 ] By: Charles Smith Posted in » Questions

I’m eager to read what interests you in Rally. Is it the competition? Is it the engineering? Does the star factor related to the top racers keep you coming back for more? What gets you going for Rally?

Personally, I find the competition and engineering the most appealing (probably a reason I love F1 too). Sure, there a whole lot of other reasons that keep me coming back but what pulls me out of the slumps is the amazing things that happen in Rally. Find any rally “highlights” video on youtube and what those cars and drivers do makes my jaw drop (competition pushes the drivers and engineers). Pure amazement.

So comment below, or throw me an email (twoguysrally gmail). I really am interested.

Some other common reasons I’ve heard in the past: offroad racing, friend/family member involved, alcohol (really), pit girls…

My number 1 would be the “rally family”. The goal is always to finish, and I’ve seen our 2 person crew suddenly get 10 helpers in the service park. “Do you guys have a wrench I can borrow?” “Sure!” In no other form of motorsport do you see competitors dig deep to help each other.

Number 2 for me would be the game of rally itself. Everything from a co-drivers calculations on a transit, to the strut you just welded back on the car, can influence a win or a loss at a rally. From the top AWD teams to the last 2WD car - If you screw up an instruction or a small detail - you can throw it all away. The logistics of getting a car to an event alone would fill up a small book. I love the game.

My final, and number 3 would have to be the speed. The rush I get from going as fast as I can down a dirt road - beats all. I can actually drive a sedate and gas saving 65 on the highway, knowing that in a month or so we’ll be flat out over a crest at 90. Be smooth - Don’t lift! :)

Awesome. Yea Rally is quite different from other motorsports. Although in the WRC I doubt Citroen will loan SWRT a wrench :P

I love the overall grit. It’s got all the dramatic elements: Man vs Man, Man vs Himself, Man vs Machine, Man vs Nature.

The cars are performing in the rawest of elements… rain or shine, day or night, snow, ice, mud, gravel, pavement, etc. across the stages and races.

The technical prowess of the drivers is nothing short of amazing.

The engineering that goes into these cars (far from the [yawn] “Car of Tomorrow” NASCAR suffers across all the grid) is great as they are taking consumer-available cars and modifying them… granted the WRC cars have had many, many parts reinforced or replaced, but the spirit is there.
